How is an eye exam classified?

Insurance companies classify your exam based on the reason for your visit and the results.

  • Routine Eye Exam: Checks vision, updates prescriptions, and screens for eye disease. Covered by vision insurance.

  • Medical Eye Exam: Involves diagnosis or treatment of conditions like diabetes, glaucoma, or dry eye. Billed to medical insurance.

What if my exam is medical?

  • We’ll bill your medical insurance. Co-pays, deductibles, and non-covered services (like refraction) may apply.

What is a refraction?

  • A refraction determines your eyeglass prescription. Vision plans usually cover it; medical plans may not.
